An ITOL Nationally accredited interactive self instructed training programme.

This course combines an interactive self-instructed training resource and practical activities including basic life support.

The course is specifically designed for Dental Practices and aims to ensure that all members of staff can identify and initiate basic management of clinical emergencies. This includes monitoring the patient , identifying patients who are Ôat riskÕ or are becoming critically ill, basic life support.

The self-directed learning course aims to build the learnerÕs confidence by enhancement of both skills and knowledge in a progressive manner. Each module has clear learning outcomes and activities which the learner can undertake at a time and pace convenient for them, which means no need to close the Practice !.

The course material is of the highest quality written and presented by an experienced Practitioner who teaches for both the Resuscitation Council (UK) and European Resuscitation Council (ERC).

Course objectives

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify at risk and seriously ill patients using the ABCDE approach.
  • Describe how to take a blood glucose measurement from a patient.
  • Identify the appropriate drugs to use in an emergency.
  • Complete a progress assessment on the ABCDE approach.
  • Carry out an initial assessment of an unconscious patient.
  • Identify the appropriate help required.
  • Place the patient into the recovery position.
  • Monitor the patient using the ABCDE approach
  • Describe the safe administration of oxygen
  • Be aware of the treatment for choking
  • Identify the most suitable method of establishing an airway depending on the clinical status of a patient
  • Identify when and how to carry out basic life support
  • Practise basic life support skills on adults and children
  • Develop the confidence and competence as a team member in initiating basic life support
  • Consolidate all the aspects of the self instructed learning programme
  • Enable the safe handover to the patient to the ambulance team

Course assessment:

Peer assessment training to include an interactive exam

Peer assessment of basic life support

Knowledge assessment (pass mark 75%)

A few Questions and Answers

Q. Is this training accredited ?.

A. Yes this training is accredited through the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning, and meets the requirements for CPD under the GDC lifelong learning scheme.

Q. Why is this better than face to face training ?.

A. The traditional method of face to face training limits you to a 2-3 hour session once a year. Compared to this method of learning where you have access to the interactive program and equipment for 365 days a year. The cost is significantly cheaper as you are not paying for a trainer each year. You don't have to arrange for everyone to be in the same place at the same time for the training, and you don't have to close the practice.

Q. What are the course aims and objectives ?.

Q. What if I have just my training ?

A. There is still a requirement  to practice your skills regularly and carry out scenario training. As all equipment is provided and along with set scenarios this is ideal for you.

Q. Is there a limit to the number of employees who can take the course ?.

 A. No. The licence is for the dental practice. Only people who are employed by the licenced practice may take the course. If you are a chain of practices then you will need a licence for each practice.

Q. How many times can I take the course ?.

A. You can take the course as many times as you wish within the 2 year period.

Q. Can I try the course before I purchase it ?.

A. Yes, you can request a 7 day free software trial by post of as a download. The evaluation edition does not include any of the assessment material or equipment. It does however include a free desktop guide with our compliments.

Q. Do I get a certificate?.

A. Yes. When you have completed all the activities and assessments you can print a CPD certificate of course completion. You will also receive an electronic certificate to accompany your printed certificate. To prevent fraud you must produce both certificates for audit purposes.

There is also an option to pay for a Internationally / Nationally Accredited ITOL Certificate. The fee for this is £20 + VAT  paid to ITOL. Application for this is made by verification of your completed course work.
